This role requires deep Django expertise, proven monolith decomposition experience, and the ability to maintain 99.9% uptime while transforming architecture.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a Senior Middleware Architect to lead the transformation of our Django monolith into a scalable microservices architecture. This is a rare opportunity to architect systems that directly impact millions of hardworking families while solving complex technical challenges at scale.

You'll join at a pivotal moment as we scale from our current 30M user base to 50M+ over the next two years. Your architectural decisions will shape how millions of people send money home, pay bills, and build financial stability in America.

What You'll Do

• Lead Architectural Transformation: Decompose our 52-app Django monolith into well-designed microservices while maintaining 99.9% uptime
• Optimize Critical Systems: Eliminate 346 identified N+1 queries and reduce response times from 3-5 seconds to under 500ms
• Design Integration Architecture: Architect resilient integration patterns for 22 third-party services including Galileo, Plaid, TabaPay, and MoneyGram
• Scale Data Infrastructure: Optimize PostgreSQL performance handling 50,000+ daily transactions and implement intelligent caching strategies
• Modernize Deployment Pipeline: Reduce deployment cycles from 2 weeks to 2 days through CI/CD improvements and service isolation
• Mentor Engineering Teams: Guide 10+ engineers through the transformation, establishing best practices and architectural patterns
• Drive Technical Strategy: Partner with leadership to define and execute the 3-year technical roadmap

What You Bring

Required Experience:

• 8-12 years of backend development with 5+ years of Django production experience
• Successfully led 2+ monolith-to-microservices transformations at scale
• Deep expertise in PostgreSQL optimization, including query planning and index strategies
• Proven experience with distributed systems, message queues (Celery), and caching (Redis)
• Strong API design skills (REST, GraphQL, gRPC) with versioning and backward compatibility
• Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS preferred)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Financial services or fintech experience, especially in payments or banking
• Experience with high-compliance environments (PCI-DSS, SOC2)
• Knowledge of event-driven architectures and domain-driven design
• Familiarity with modern observability tools (DataDog, New Relic)
• Contributions to open source projects or technical thought leadership

• Backend: Django 4.2.9, Django REST Framework, Python 3.x
• Data: PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery with 15+ specialized queues
• Integrations: 22 third-party APIs including banking, payments, and verification services
• Infrastructure: AWS, Docker, GitHub Actions
• Scale: 884 API endpoints, 50K+ daily transactions, 30M+ users
